White walls and patterned tiles or colored walls and neutral tiles? Neutral coatings and colored furniture or vice versa? Intense and bright colors or delicate and de saturated shades? The choice of the color of the bathroom is an important consideration, because it is closely related to the overall furnishing project and the choice of materials and finishes. In this post some tips on choosing the color of the bathroom and not regret it!
Decorating the bathroom with color. Tired of the excessive minimalism or anonymity (according to some) of black and white, beige and greige, gray and cream, the interior design focuses on color, and even the bathroom becomes a palette on which to give free rein to your creativity.
Choosing the color of the walls in the bathroom today means defining the color palette of the entire furniture project, and coherently coordinating all the elements that make up the environment. In fact, one cannot ignore the chosen finishes and materials: wood, marble, stone, metal or glass radically change the appearance of the room, therefore the color must also be defined on the basis of these parameters, also evaluating the different reflection of the light on each of them.
There are no right colors for the bathroom: it is not possible to establish hard and fast rules about which are the best chromatic shades for this room, because personal taste (rightly) influences the choice always. However, there are guidelines to follow so as not to overdo it, not to create risky combinations and to best dose the palettes so that the result is aesthetically harmonious.
So how to proceed to choose the colors of the bathroom?
Going in order, making a list of decorative elements to be inserted and then establishing design priorities based on personal preferences.
1 |Bathroom furniture materials and finishes
The contemporary bathroom furniture proposals allow a wide range of customization: fronts and doors of bathroom furniture, frame of shower enclosures, bathroom accessories, shelves and furnishing accessories. In fact, there is no limit to the design interpretations and the color choice of the bathroom walls, as we said just above, necessarily depends on the definition of all the other elements.
If the bathroom furniture is in neutral colors, for example, you can focus on the color of the walls to characterize the environment. In this way it will be enough to repaint the walls to totally renew the bathroom. On the contrary, a composition with a strong color can be the protagonist element in an environment with neutral walls (as in the following photos).
If you prefer neutral coatings and walls, therefore, you can focus exclusively on bathroom furnishings: modern and colorful bathroom furniture can characterize the interior not only thanks to the lacquering (matt, glossy, metallized) but also through patterns and marble veins, soft touch surfaces or decorated Corian. Color does not mean only large surfaces, in short, but also details, accents, hinted shades.
2 | Shower enclosure frame, accessories and taps
These furnishing elements also affect the color choice of the bathroom, especially today that they are offered in dozens of different colors. In recent years, for example, the finishes of the shower enclosure frames have multiplied, which can be coordinated with taps and accessories (or even with the metallic lacquering of the furniture and washbasins).
In this case, it is preferable to give priority to metallic accents and detail rather than a color in the bathroom that is too striking.
3 | Bathroom style
Infinite, even the style of the bathroom influences the chromatic choice of the various furnishing elements.
Nordic style lovers do not like bright colors, preferring a cold palette and light and bright colors (ice gray or light blue for example) combined with light wood; those who prefer vintage style can appreciate the bright metallic finishes and shades of beige, as well as fans of the industrial style could opt for rigorous choices and contrasting metallic elements.
A young and easy bathroom could instead focus on the color element as the main feature of the environment, taking advantage of the variegated color palette available today.
For the modern bathroom the options are many and decidedly trendy: you can choose shades of green or turquoise, or more neutral colors such as dove gray or light blue. You can also choose black, or another very dark color, for a contrasting wall (only one!) On a light piece of furniture: it will highlight it even more, without being heavy. Also, for a push towards contemporary, try a two-tone wall with flat finishes so not to overpower.
For a classic bathroom the choice is usually traditional and falls on neutral colors such as beige and gray. For a more personal touch, also in this case choose a contrasting wall, in a color like burgundy.
The shabby chic style instead points to less classic but sober colors: lavender, sage green and blue, usually combined with bathroom furniture in natural materials such as wood. For the home with ethnic furnishings, the colors are very similar: lilac and moss green
Choose the color of the walls for the small bathroom
Light colors are often thought to be the best choice in a small bathroom, but that’s not always the case. A contrasting color, chosen to emphasize a single wall, or the shower area, or horizontal wall color divide (why not), can give a unique character to the bathroom without necessarily weighing down the environment. It is always good to evaluate the whole also considering the choice of artificial lighting and the incidence of natural lighting.
Choose the bathroom colors without regretting it!
A universal advice is not to stubbornly follow passing fashions or temporary trends, reflecting well on your tastes and on the possibility that a too particular color can tire.
